The First Porsche to Buy If You're Going to Modify It (It's Not the One the Purists Recommend)

If you're buying a Porsche to modify, buy a turbocharged one you can afford and leave the naturally aspirated cars with the famous failure stories to the people who want to keep them original. A 2017–2019 718 Cayman or Boxster 2.0T is the best first Porsche for a modifier at $40–60k, because software alone turns it into a faster car than a stock 718 S — measured, not claimed. A 991.2 Carrera is the answer at $75k and up, for the same reason. Under $35,000 the honest choices are a 2009–2012 987.2 Cayman — a base car or an S with PDK at that money — with no IMS bearing to fear, or a 996 Carrera bought with a borescope report, knowing that on those cars your money goes into chassis, brakes and headers, because a flash is typically quoted at 15–20 horsepower and everyone selling you more is rounding up.

The forums will tell you the first Porsche you buy should be a cheap Boxster to see if you like it, and that if you want more power you should buy the next model up. Both are purist answers to a question a purist wouldn't ask. You're not buying a Porsche to keep it as it left Zuffenhausen. You're buying one to take further — tune it, exhaust it, lower it, brake it, track it. That changes the shopping list, and we couldn't find a buying guide written for it. So here it is: every mainstream water-cooled Porsche sports car from the 986 to the 992, plus the Macan, judged on one question the other guides skip — what does it actually give back when you modify it?

Who this guide is for, and who it isn't

It isn't for the owner keeping a car standard, and we mean that without a sneer. Porsche purists are right about their cars. A Porsche Club GB member who replied to a 981 GTS owner with "the 3.4 in the 981 GTS is a great engine, I personally wouldn't mess with it" is telling the truth about an engine that gains almost nothing from software. The advice is correct; it just isn't for you.

It is for the enthusiast who has watched a tuned 718 2.0T embarrass a stock S on a back road and wants to know what that costs. For the BMW owner — we see a lot of you — thinking about a first Porsche and worried the forums are right that there is no such thing as a cheap one. For the Macan owner who asked whether it could be tuned and got a warranty lecture instead of a number. The only question that matters here is the one a 911uk member put to a hopeful tuner — "what are you going to do with the car?" If the answer is "more," read on.

The one rule that decides everything: is it turbocharged?

A calibration is the cheapest horsepower any modern car can buy, and on a turbocharged Porsche it is real. Cobb's own 2018 testing — wheel figures, 93 octane, Stage 1 map — took a 718 2.0T from 301 whp and 303 wtq to 346 whp and 326 wtq. The same test put a stock 718 2.5 S at 338 whp and 318 wtq. Read that again: a base 718 with software out-dynos the S you'd pay $12,000 more for, before the S has been touched. On the 991.2, Cobb measured a base Carrera at 367 whp and 336 wtq and took it to 435 whp and 460 wtq — past a stock Carrera S (403 whp and 376 wtq) by 32 horsepower and 84 lb-ft. Those are Cobb's numbers from Cobb's testing — the 991.2 runs, by Cobb's own note, on an external dyno — and they don't state the dyno type, so treat them as one shop's measurement rather than gospel. They are still the only published before-and-after wheel figures for a flash on these cars that we found, and the direction is not in dispute.

A naturally aspirated Porsche is a different proposition. Cobb's note for the 9A1-engined 997.2 says its 100-octane map adds "an additional 4-5 peak horsepower" over the 93 map. UK owners on 911uk discussing 991.1 remaps say that "proper tuning companies are only getting 20bhp for stage 1" and that "you might squeeze 25 bhp if you are lucky but it will never be night and day." Vendors quote more — one lists a 987 Cayman S at 295 → 315 hp — but those are unmeasured crank claims. What actually moves an NA Porsche is hardware and weight: Soul Performance's 981 competition headers measured 26 whp and 24 lb-ft in Soul's own back-to-back test, but as part of a package with a valved exhaust, intake, tune, plenum and GT3 throttle body, and they cost about $3,500 on their own. That is the NA arithmetic. It is not bad. It is simply a chassis-and-hardware project, and you should buy the car knowing it.

The exception is the Mezger-engined cars — the 996 and 997.1 Turbo, and every GT3 and GT2 through 2011 — which are a lineage of their own: a water-cooled engine descended from Porsche's 911 GT1 Le Mans program and the 956/962 racing engines, with a true dry sump and none of the M96/M97's problems. Tuners have been flashing 996 and 997 Turbos for two decades; Softronic claims 420 → 520 bhp on a 996 Turbo and 480 → 590 on a 997.1, again unmeasured "BHP" claims with no dyno shown. In the US those cars are $77,000 and $117,000 propositions at 2026 benchmarks. In the UK, 996 Turbos sold at £25,000–£33,000 in September 2025 auction results, which makes the 996 Turbo the most tunable Porsche per pound on the planet, coolant-pipe surgery included.

The decision framework

Every platform below is scored on the four things a modifier — not a collector — actually pays for.

Prices below are 2026 market benchmarks — CLASSIC.COM's aggregated dealer and auction figures for the US (manual cars where stated, otherwise PDK/automatic) and PistonHeads listings and Collecting Cars auction results for the UK, as observed on 10 September 2026. They move. The relationships between them don't move much.

The chassis school: 986 and 996 Carrera

986 Boxster and Boxster S (1997–2004)

Benchmarks: base manual about $13,600, S manual about $16,900 in the US. The cheapest mid-engine Porsche there is, and a real driver's car. It is also the car the IMS bearing legend was written about. The facts, from LN Engineering, who built the fix: the dual-row bearing through 1999 had a reported failure rate around 1 percent in the class-action data; the single-row bearing from 2000 through 2005 was reported at 8 percent under warranty, and "in the years since the lawsuit was settled, failure rates … have only increased." Replacement runs $3,500–4,500 at a shop. The 2.5 and 3.4 M96 engines also have a documented cylinder-wall "D-chunk" failure that, ironically, "occur[s] mostly in gently driven cars"; the 3.2 S was built with thicker walls. Software does little here, and tool support is thin — Softronic lists the 986; Cobb doesn't. Buy an S manual with the IMS already done or budget to do it, then spend on suspension, brakes, tires and a deeper sump if you're going to track it. Verdict: a superb first sports car and a poor first tuning platform. Know which one you're buying.

996 Carrera and Carrera 4S (1998–2004)

Benchmarks: 996.1 Carrera coupe manual about $30,200, automatic about $22,300; 996.2 manual about $32,800; C4S manual about $43,100. In the UK, Collecting Cars' September 2025 results put a 3.4 around £15,500, a 3.6 at £17,000–19,000, and a C4S at £20,000–28,000 — this is the cheapest 911 in the world, and in Britain it is genuinely cheap. Same IMS schedule as the Boxster; the 3.4 has the D-chunk risk and belongs to the earlier engines Hartech calls "generally OK" for bore scoring, while the 3.6 is one of the engines Hartech names as affected — while adding that scoring is "still very rare and not at all typical." It is naturally aspirated, so the flash return is small and the money goes to the chassis. What you get for it is a 911 — hydraulic steering, a manual, and the badge that makes every later decision feel like less of a leap. Verdict: the right first 911 for a modifier who wants a 911 more than they want horsepower, bought on a borescope and an IMS receipt. If you want horsepower from this era, keep reading to the Turbo.

Where the smart money is: 987, 997.1 and Macan

987.1 Cayman and Cayman S (2006–2008)

Benchmark: 987.1 Cayman average sale about $27,600, with S cars listed in 2025 from about $22,000 (high miles) to $45,000; 987s from £7,450 in the UK. Every 987 Cayman carries the larger bearing Porsche fitted from MY2006 that "can only be replaced with complete engine disassembly" (a 2005 987 Boxster has the single-row). The 3.4 Cayman S is one of the engines Hartech names as affected by bore scoring, and the scoring is "almost always from bank 2" — cylinders 4, 5 and 6 — which is exactly where a borescope goes during your PPI. Naturally aspirated; Softronic covers it, Cobb doesn't. Verdict: a wonderful chassis with two engine questions you can answer before you pay. Answer them.

987.2 Cayman and Cayman S (2009–2012) — the pick under $35,000, if it's a base or an S with PDK

The 2009 engine is the 9A1: direct injection, 265 PS base and 320 PS S, no intermediate-shaft bearing at all, and the 7-speed PDK arrives. Bore scoring on the 9A1 is documented as possible — LN Engineering says so plainly — but the IMS conversation is over, and that removes the largest single fear from the purchase. Cobb supports the 987.2 Cayman S, Cayman R and Boxster S/Spyder including a PDK flash that firms shifts and reduces "continuous clutch slip"; Softronic covers the range. The flash return is still NA-small. What you're buying is the last Cayman with hydraulic steering, the first with a modern engine, and a PDK you can actually calibrate. Benchmarks: base manual about $32,900, S PDK about $33,800, S manual about $42,000; a 2010 Cayman S PDK listed at £24,990 in the UK in September 2026. Verdict: if the budget stops at $35,000 and you want to modify a Porsche without a bearing on your conscience, this is the car — a base, or an S with the PDK; the S manual carries a premium that takes it past that line.

997.1 Carrera and Carrera S (2005–2008)

Benchmarks: Carrera coupe manual about $42,400, S manual about $52,000; 997s from £28,000 in the UK. Prettier than the 996, priced like it, and — for a modifier — carrying the two heaviest engine risks in this guide at once: the non-serviceable 2006–2008 bearing and bore scoring on both the 3.6 and the 3.8, which Hartech names, with the 996 3.6 and Cayman S 3.4, as the engines with the newer scoring problem. Flat Six Innovations' position is that "no bore scoring is truly acceptable; it only varies by severity." Repair is $5,000–6,000 for sleeving or $15,000–30,000 for a rebuild. Verdict: a purist's car. If you want a 997 to modify, the 997.2 below is the same body with the engine that makes it possible.

Macan S and 2.0T (2017–2018)

Listings in September 2026: a 2017 Macan S at about $23,000 and a 2018 S at about $25,000, with a 2018 Turbo at $35,000; £28,000–30,500 for a GTS or S in the UK. This is the four-door answer, and it tunes because it's turbocharged. APR's Stage 1 for the 2.0T is quoted by its resellers at 310–318 hp, a gain of 64–70 hp at the crank; Cobb claims "up to 25%" on the same engine and supports the S, GTS and Turbo V6s as well. The known weak point is the transfer case on 2014–2018 cars — the class action produced a seven-year extended warranty, and one plaintiff was quoted about $5,000 for the repair — and the PDK wants fluid every 60,000 miles at $500–800 independent. Verdict: the only Porsche here that will carry a child seat and take a claimed 60-plus-hp flash on the same day.

The answer, and its neighbors: 718, 981 and 997.2

718 Cayman and Boxster 2.0T (2017–2019), and the 718 T

Benchmark: 718 Cayman base about $49,300, T about $61,600; £35,980–£36,000 for 2017–2018 2.0T PDK cars in the UK. This is the car. Cobb's numbers again: 301 → 346 whp on a Stage 1 map, which is 8 whp more than a stock S. The Accessport lists at $1,795 (seen discounted to $1,615). Add it to the base benchmark and you're at roughly $51,000 for a car that out-runs the $61,000 S — before the S owner has spent a dollar, and while the 2.0T still has the S's headroom to go after with hardware. The 718 T is a 2.0T with the 20 mm sport suspension and the GT4 short-shifter from the factory; for a modifier it's the base car with the first two mods already done, if the premium is right.

Now the honest part. Cobb wrote in that same 2018 article that "the factory air-to-water intercooler setup is already showing signs of heat-soak at Stage 1 power levels." Heat is the 718's real ceiling, not the engine, and the owners who've gone furthest have addressed it: a Porsche Club GB member running a base 2.0T at "400bhp and 378lb/ft" with the GTS third radiator and water-methanol reported his "last track day absolutely no problems with temps or power drop." Budget for cooling if you plan to lean on it. The other 718 facts: when Cobb launched 718 and 991.2 support in 2018 the DME had to be shipped to Texas for unlocking; a firmware update Cobb announced in early 2020 lets the Accessport install through the OBD port, and other vendors flash through the port as well. And if your car is a European or UK 2019-and-later example, it has a gasoline particulate filter — a 57-page Porsche Club GB thread that had passed 200,000 views by September 2026 documents a 2019 Cayman quoted £5,800 plus VAT for a GPF at 17,000 miles and not covered by the Porsche Approved warranty, with Porsche GB "aware of this issue" and, as of this month, still no definitive cause. The filter was a European-legislation fitment; US-market cars are generally without it, but confirm on the individual car. Buy accordingly.

The four-cylinder sound is the tax. If it bothers you more than 45 horsepower pleases you, buy the 981 S and spend your money on headers. Verdict: the best first Porsche for a modifier, full stop.

718 Cayman and Boxster S / GTS 2.5T (2017–2019)

Benchmark: S about $61,100, GTS 2.5 about $68,100; £37,000–£45,000 in the UK for S cars, £60,000 for a 2023. Cobb measured 338 → 355 whp on the S and 345 → 378 on the GTS. The 2.5T gains less from software than the 2.0T does — 17 whp against 45 — because it starts closer to the same fuel-and-heat wall. Vendors quote higher figures (one claims 425 hp on a GTS), and a UK Cobb dealer notes that APR and Cobb are both "quoting around the same 440bhp power max" for the 2.5. Verdict: buy the S if you want the S's sound and headroom for hardware; don't buy it expecting the flash to feel like the base car's.

981 Cayman and Boxster (2013–2016)

Benchmarks: base about $38,100, S about $51,500, GTS about $63,900; £25,000 upward in the UK, a 2014 S PDK at £34,990. The 9A1 flat-six at its best, and the one the purists will steer you to. They're right about the engine and right about the software — a remap "is unlikely to give you a worthwhile power increase," per the club forum — so this is a headers-exhaust-plenum-suspension car with a measured 26 whp available from the top of that list. Bore scoring on the 9A1 remains possible and inspectable. Verdict: the best-sounding car on this page, and the one to buy if you already know a flash isn't your plan.

997.2 Carrera and Carrera S (2009–2012)

Benchmarks: Carrera coupe manual about $58,800, PDK about $46,600; S manual about $72,800, PDK about $56,800; a 2010 S at £47,997 in the UK. The 997 body with the 9A1 engine: no IMS, direct injection, PDK, and Cobb support for the S and GTS including the PDK flash. The NA rule applies — Cobb's own note is "4-5 peak horsepower" for the 100-octane step — but the 997.2 is the 911 a modifier can buy without the bearing or the M97 scoring history, and it was the 991.2 that introduced coated cylinder bores to address the 9A1's scoring mechanism, so the 997.2 sits in the middle of that story. Verdict: the sensible 997.

The 911s with boost, and the last one without: 991.2, 996 and 997 Turbo, 991.1

991.2 Carrera and Carrera S (2017–2019) — the pick above $75,000

Benchmarks (PDK cars): Carrera coupe about $76,400, S about $96,500; £61,500–£70,000 in the UK. The first turbocharged Carrera, and the reason it's here: Cobb's base-Carrera result of 367 → 435 whp and 336 → 460 wtq puts a flashed base past a stock S by a wider margin than the 718's, for a $20,000 price gap. Cobb's map notes describe Stage 1 boost at "18 psi +/- 2psi tapering off to redline," and for the Carrera S quote +12% peak and +17% maximum on 93. Softronic claims 370 → 485 "BHP" through the port, unmeasured; Litchfield in the UK developed on its own 991.2. EU cars from 2019 have the GPF. Verdict: if the budget reaches a 991.2, buy the base Carrera and tune it. The S premium buys you a badge and 36 stock horsepower that the base car recovers from software with change to spare.

996 Turbo (2001–2005) and 997.1 Turbo (2007–2009)

Benchmarks: 996.2 Turbo coupe manual about $77,500; 997.1 Turbo manual about $117,400; in the UK, £25,000–33,000 for a 996 Turbo at September 2025 auction and about £56,000 for a 2007 997 Turbo listed in September 2026. The Mezger engine, oil-fed plain bearings where the M96 had its IMS problem, and turbochargers. Vendor claims run to +100 bhp on a flash, and the Mezger's racing origin is why tuners trust it with that. The one job you do first: the coolant pipes on every 996/997 Turbo, GT2 and GT3 are glued into their castings and can "come out of the cast block (with the hose still attached), resulting in a rapid loss of engine coolant" — pinning them (Shark Werks' method) is a known fix, and the first thing a modifier's PPI asks is whether it has been done. Get it quoted before you buy. Verdict: in the US, a Mezger Turbo is a serious-money purchase and the 991.2 is the better tuning value. In the UK, a £30,000 996 Turbo is the most horsepower-per-pound in the Porsche world, and it isn't close.

991.1 Carrera and Carrera S (2012–2016)

Benchmarks (PDK cars): Carrera about $59,400, S about $73,600; £42,000–£70,000. The last NA Carrera, with electric steering, the 9A1's scoring possibility, and the same "maybe 20bhp" remap ceiling as the 981. Verdict: buy it for the engine if you want the last of that engine; the 991.2 is the modifier's 991.

The top of the range: 992, 718 GTS 4.0 and GT4

992 Carrera and Carrera S (2020+)

Benchmarks: Carrera coupe about $110,100, S about $133,000, Turbo about $205,500; £90,000–£135,000 in the UK. Everything the 991.2 argument said, with more of it: Litchfield claims 380 → 503 bhp on a base Carrera and 444 → 572 on an S, crank, on 99 RON, for £1,194; M-Engineering flashes through the port at $2,495 and says plainly that Porsche can overwrite the tune at a service; Cobb's Accessport is $1,809–2,010. Cobb publishes its 992 gains as charts rather than numbers, so we won't quote them. The transmission detail worth knowing: for the 992 Turbo and Turbo S, Cobb sells a $1,055 PDK high-torque calibration it describes as "required for power beyond COBB Stage 1," because "the factory transmission calibration can become a limiting factor." That is a Turbo-only product; as of its 2024 update, Cobb has no Carrera PDK tune. Verdict: the best modern Porsche to modify if the budget is there — buy the base and tune it, again.

718 GTS 4.0, GT4 and Spyder (2020+)

Benchmarks: GTS 4.0 about $102,800, GT4 manual about $123,300; about £67,000 for a 2022 GTS 4.0 in the UK. Naturally aspirated 4.0, with Cobb's calibrations loaded on the Accessport out of the box; Cobb raises the GTS 4.0's redline "from 7800 RPM to 8000 RPM" to match the GT4 and Spyder and sharpens the PDK, with gains published only as charts. This is a track car from the factory and it rewards track hardware — brakes, tires, cooling, seats — not software. Verdict: buy it for the engine. It's the one NA car on this list where "leave it alone" and "modify it" arrive at the same garage.

What a modifier's pre-purchase inspection actually checks

A standard Porsche PPI runs $500 minimum by LN Engineering's estimate and $500–1,500 at the independents who publish prices; a good one includes a PIWIS scan with full fault history, over-rev data, compression or leak-down, and a borescope. As the buyer who intends to modify, you're reading it for five things.

The over-rev report. Every water-cooled Porsche DME records ignitions above the limiter in ranges. On a 997 Carrera, Range 1 is 7,300–7,500 rpm and Range 6 is above 9,500; on a 987 Boxster, Range 1 starts at 7,200. LN's guidance: Ranges 1 and 2 are "typically considered safe"; Ranges 3 and 4, as of 2018, warrant compression tests and oil checks; Ranges 5 and 6 "historically invalidated warranties." The Porsche Club of America's tech desk adds that "Porsche will not CPO a car with Range 4 or higher." Timing matters as much as count: an event inside the last 50 operating hours is the high-risk window, while one from more than 200 hours ago "may be considered" for warranty, per LN's summary of Porsche's 2018 policy. A manual car that's been money-shifted writes its history here, and those counters are exactly what the PPI's DME interrogation reads.

The borescope. M96/M97 3.4, 3.6 and 3.8 engines, and any 9A1, get cylinders 4, 5 and 6 scoped. Flat Six's tells are oil consumption, smoke at start-up and "piston slap" noise; the scope is the only proof.

The bearing. Model year decides it: dual-row through 1999, single-row 2000–2005, non-serviceable 2006–2008, gone from 2009. Ask for the receipt or price the job.

The pipes. Mezger cars: pinned, welded, or original. Cayenne V8s of 2003–2006 have their own plastic coolant pipes under the intake. Macans of 2014–2018: transfer case behavior and warranty status.

Has it been tuned? There is no published Porsche document on how a dealer identifies a flash, only owners on 911uk reporting that PIWIS "can show a history of ecu flashes" and that the dealer "can see the mapping changes even if reverted back to stock." Two physical facts are firmer: a 718 or 991.2 unlocked under Cobb's original 2018 process had its DME lid opened, after which Cobb would "reseal the ECU with sealant and clamp the lid back down" — which a technician can see — and M-Engineering's own FAQ confirms a dealer can overwrite a tune during service. If you're buying a modified car, price it as one.

The money, honestly

Porsche's US warranty booklet excludes damage from "modifications not authorized by PCNA" and from "competition, racing, track use," and Porsche will not certify a car with a high over-rev history. In the UK, one 911uk member's warning that "OPC won't go anywhere near honouring the warranty on a mapped engine" sits in the same thread as another's claim that painting your calipers voids it too — which tells you how much of this is fear and how much is fact. The law on the US side is the same Magnuson-Moss framework we walked through for BMW in Tuning and Your Warranty: a manufacturer has to connect the modification to the failure. Plan for it, don't panic about it.

Running costs are less dramatic than the forums suggest for a car that's been bought right. RepairPal's aggregate puts a 911 at about $1,072 a year in maintenance and repair against $739 for luxury midsize cars, and a Cayman at $1,135 against $801 for luxury compacts. The numbers that hurt are the fix-first items: $3,500–4,500 for an IMS, $5,000–6,000 to sleeve scored cylinders, $15,000–30,000 for a rebuild, and the roughly $5,000 one Macan owner was quoted for a transfer case outside the extended warranty. Every one of them is inspectable before you buy, which is the whole reason for the section above.

And the tuning economics, using Cobb's measurements and the September 2026 benchmarks: a 718 2.0T plus Accessport is about $51,000 and makes 346 whp; a stock 718 S is about $61,000 and makes 338. A 991.2 Carrera plus Accessport ($1,809–2,010) is about $78,500 and makes 435 whp; a stock Carrera S is about $96,500 and makes 403. The base-and-tune route saves $10,000–18,000 and finishes ahead, with the same headroom left for hardware. That is the sentence the purist buying guides never write, and it's the one that should decide your purchase.

Where we stand

Several of our team came here from shops where Porsche performance and track work was the job, and that experience is in this guide without anyone's name on it. Every modern-platform number here is still a published figure with its source named and labeled as measured or claimed, because that is the standard we hold our own claims to. What we bring to the water-cooled cars beyond that is the thing we do every week on BMWs: calibrating turbocharged direct-injection engines from their own datalogs, and knowing the difference between a claim and a log. Bottom line

Buy turbocharged if you want software to matter: the 718 2.0T under $60,000, the 991.2 Carrera under $100,000, the 992 above it, and the Macan if you need four doors. Under $35,000, buy the 987.2 Cayman for a clean modern engine or a 996 for the 911 experience, and put the money into the chassis, because that's where those cars pay back. Inspect for the one failure each engine is famous for before you sign, and price the fix into the offer. And ignore anyone who tells you the right first Porsche is the one you'll leave alone. 1. What is the cheapest Porsche that's actually worth modifying?

For software gains, a 2017–2019 718 Cayman or Boxster 2.0T — around $49,000 in the US and £36,000 in the UK in 2026 — because a Stage 1 flash takes it past a stock 718 S at the wheels. Below that budget, a 2009–2012 987.2 Cayman has no IMS bearing and modern injection, but it's naturally aspirated, so the money goes into chassis and hardware rather than a tune.

2. Can a tuned 718 base really match a 718 S?

By Cobb's 2018 wheel-dyno measurements, a Stage 1 2.0T made 346 whp and 326 wtq against a stock 2.5 S at 338 whp and 318 wtq — so yes, slightly ahead. The S starts closer to the platform's heat and fuel limits, which is probably why it gains only 17 whp from the same map.

3. Is a 996 a good first Porsche to modify?

It's a good first 911 and a modest tuning platform. The Carrera is naturally aspirated and a flash is typically quoted at 15–20 hp — nobody has published a measured 996 figure; its IMS bearing and bore-scoring risks are real but inspectable with a borescope and service history. The 996 Turbo is a different car — a Mezger engine that takes a real tune — and in the UK it's the cheapest way into serious Porsche horsepower.

4. Which Porsche gains the most from a tune?

Turbocharged ones. Measured at the wheels by Cobb: a base 991.2 Carrera gained 68 whp and 124 wtq, a 718 2.0T gained 45 whp, a 718 2.5 S gained 17 whp. Naturally aspirated Porsches — 986, 987, 981, 996 and 997 Carreras, 991.1 — are quoted at single digits to about 20 hp from software; Cobb publishes its 718 4.0 gains only as charts.

5. Can a Porsche Macan be tuned safely?

Cobb supports the 2.0T and the V6 S, GTS and Turbo; APR's Stage 1 for the 2.0T is quoted by its resellers at a 64–70 hp gain; Softronic lists the Macan too. Check the transfer case on 2014–2018 cars, which have a seven-year extended warranty after a class action, and keep the PDK on its 60,000-mile fluid interval.

6. Manual or PDK if I'm going to modify it?

Either, on most platforms. PDK flashes exist for the 987.2, 997.2 and 718, and Cobb's 992 PDK high-torque calibration is required only past Stage 1 on the Turbo and Turbo S. A manual's risk is the over-rev report — a missed shift is recorded in the DME's ranges — so read it before you buy a manual car.

7. Does tuning void a Porsche warranty?

Porsche's warranty terms exclude damage from unauthorized modifications and track use, and a dealer can overwrite a flash during service. In the US the manufacturer still has to connect the modification to the specific failure it declines, under the same law we explain in our BMW warranty article. Assume a flash can be seen, and buy with that on the table.
