An off-the-shelf (OTS) map is enough when your car is the car the map was written for: factory turbo, factory fueling, the fuel the label names at real pump quality, hardware the map anticipated, a climate and altitude that don't eat into the knock margin, and a gearbox limit you're staying under. Change one of those and the map fits worse. Change two and a calibration built from your own datalogs stops being the upgrade and becomes the safer purchase. We only sell custom calibrations, and we will still tell you when you don't need one.
This is the question we get more than any other, and it arrives in two forms. The owner on a stock car asking whether the shelf map is "safe." And the owner who has already bought a turbo, or moved to a country with different fuel, or lives at 5,000 feet, asking why the shelf map suddenly doesn't feel right. Both deserve the same answer, which is neither "OTS is dangerous" nor "custom is always better." It's a short list of variables, and then a short list of questions to ask whoever you're about to pay — us included.
What is an OTS map, in the platforms' own words?
An OTS map is a calibration written once for a representative car and flashed to thousands of them. On bootmod3, the maps are named by stage and US pump octane — Stage 1 91, Stage 1 93, Stage 1 E30, Stage 2 E50, Racegas, plus an ACN91 variant — and one comes with the platform. bootmod3's own product pages publish the expected gains per map but do not state hardware prerequisites for Stage 2 or Stage 2+; the convention that Stage 2 means a catless downpipe and Stage 2+ means an upgraded HPFP comes from third-party guides. The one fuel assumption bootmod3 does publish is on its ACN91 maps: they exist for regions where "91 octane" can be of "questionable quality," and "lower than 95 RON (US 91 octane) cannot be used."
MHD is more explicit. Every pump-fuel map carries a dual label — "91 OCT / 95 RON," "93 OCT / 98–100 RON," "95 OCT / 102 RON" — and MHD flags its own limits in the map name: the 91-octane Stage 2 maps (and the S58's Stage 1 91 map) are marked "(fuel quality limited)," and the stock-fuel-system full-E85 maps on the B58, S58 and N55 are marked "(fuel system limited)" — on the B58 and S58, rated below the E30/E40 blend map for the same engine. On the N55, MHD publishes the hardware ladder outright: Stage 2 needs an upgraded intercooler or a high-flow downpipe, Stage 2+ needs both, Stage 2+ HPFP needs a B58TU-or-better pump.
Two things we could find no statement of on either platform's product pages, FAQs or release notes: the climate the maps were calibrated in, and the altitude. A bootmod3-sponsored review on Bimmerpost put the design goal plainly — OTS maps "are made to be as one size fits all as possible so it can work on any car in any environment." That is the honest description. It is also the whole problem, because your car is not "any car," and your environment is not "any environment."
When is an OTS map enough?
More often than a shop that sells custom tunes is supposed to admit. If all of the following are true, the shelf map is a reasonable place to start and, for a lot of owners, a reasonable place to stop:
Your turbo, fuel pumps and injectors are factory. Your hardware is either stock or exactly what the map's stage assumes — for a Stage 2 map, that means the downpipe and charge cooling the map was written around, not "a downpipe." The fuel in your tank is the fuel on the label at the quality the label implies: real 93 AKI in the US, the 97–99 RON super grades in the UK, 98 RON and up in Europe — and on the correct map for it. You drive somewhere temperate and reasonably close to sea level. You are not chasing the gearbox's torque limit. And you are willing to read a log once in a while, because "it feels fine" is not a calibration check.
The people who sell the platforms will tell you the OTS maps are "the most proven daily maps in the world." That is a vendor talking, but it isn't wrong for the car described above. A custom-tuned owner in the same thread said the quieter version: "If you are ONLY going to use 93, stay on an OTS map." We agree with both, with one addition — most Stage 1 owners are right to stop at Stage 1, and we said so in our Stage 1 vs Stage 2 vs Stage 3 guide. The shelf map is not the problem. Not knowing where it stops fitting is.
The five variables that decide it
Every one of these is a question on our intake form before a single file is written. That isn't paperwork. It's the list of things a shelf map cannot see.
1. Fuel — the label versus what's actually in the tank
The maps are labeled in US octane. Most of the world buys fuel labeled in RON, and the two scales are not the same number: the US anti-knock index is the average of RON and MON, so the same fuel reads four to six points lower on a US pump than on a European one. MHD's labels do the conversion for you (91 AKI ≈ 95 RON, 93 AKI ≈ 98–100 RON); bootmod3 only does it inside the ACN91 note. That still leaves the questions the labels can't answer. UK 95 became E10 in 2021 while the super grades stayed E5. Malaysian RON97 sits between the buckets. South Africa sells 93 inland (with 95 optional) and 95 at the coast — with Johannesburg a mile above sea level. Canadian 94 and California 91 are famous on the forums for underperforming their number — one tuner reviewing a California G20 owner's log on the ACN91 map found timing sitting at 0–1 degrees where it should have been 5–8, with nearly 11 degrees of total pull.
This is also where the "should I run the 91 map on 93 for safety?" question lives. The forum answer is "You're overthinking it. Just run the 93 tune with 93"; the dealer answer is "If you run the recommended maps, you are safe." The owner answer comes with logs: an Australian MHD user showed roughly 7° of timing pull on the 93 map and about 3° on the 91 map on the same fuel, and reported that "MHD saw my logs and said its the fuel." An M240i owner in the US on a Stage 2 91 map with 93 in the tank was still "seeing over 5 degrees pulled" until a gallon and a half of E85 per tank cleaned it up. Read those two cases together and the honest rule appears: dropping a map is a margin play that works when your fuel is worse than its label, it costs you power the whole time, and it is a symptom worth fixing at the pump before you fix it in software. A calibration written from your logs on your fuel does the same job without the guesswork.
One of the builds we're planning right now is an N20 X3 in Puerto Rico. Real 93 is easy there; ethanol arrives by the drum, at about $746 a drum. The fuel variable settled the calibration plan — a conservative 93 file first, an optional second map later — before the hybrid turbo was even installed. No shelf map could have had that conversation.
2. Hardware the map never met
A turbo is the obvious one. Pure Turbos says it on its own PURE600 product page: while the turbo is "compatible with OTS maps, performance will be limited to the parameters of that specific tune," and a custom calibration is "highly recommended… to ensure optimal engine safety." Supra owners asking whether a Pure 800 needs a tune get the same answer from their forum — "more than likely you will get a check engine light as the car tries to react to the bigger turbo," because a different compressor and turbine change flow and ramp-up "too far outside parameters." A 430i xDrive came to us in late August already driving on a Stage 2 93 OTS map with a Pure400 fitted. The first thing it got wasn't a file; it was an instruction to stay out of wide-open throttle until the first file built for that turbo was on the car. A G20 B48 headed to an IM450, port injection and flex fuel was in the same position the day we took the job: shelf map, hardware the shelf map had never heard of.
Fueling is the quieter one. A bootmod3 E50 OTS thread on the G20 forum runs for months on cars whose stock high-pressure pump couldn't keep up — E50 "tends to fall on its face on stock TU pump as it crashes" — and one owner's fix was an upgraded HPFP, not a map revision. A separate sixth-gear cut in the same thread was attributed, in a support reply one owner pasted in, by bootmod3's own developer to "some sort of transmission limitation… protection of some sort," and owners were still reporting it six months later. MHD says the same thing in its own labels: on the B58, S58 and N55, the full-E85 maps for a stock fuel system are "fuel system limited," and the S55 page says "stock fuel system limitation." Then there are the parts nobody thinks of as tuning hardware. An X6M on a Stage 2 91 OTS map went into limp mode with cylinder-one misfire codes; the advice in the thread was plugs or coils, not the map — colder NGK 97506s gapped to 0.022", because "increased boost pressure requires increased voltage to bridge the spark plugs gap." On a turbo-upgraded car we require colder plugs, gapped and verified with a feeler gauge, and healthy coils before the first log — for exactly that reason. The downpipe question belongs here too: the Stage 2 map assumes a class of exhaust, and "I have a downpipe" doesn't tell it which one.
3. Heat — where the map's margin goes first
The B58's charge cooler lives inside the intake manifold and is cooled by its own low-temperature coolant loop. CSF's testing found intake air temperatures climbing 15°F through a single fourth-gear pull on the factory heat exchanger and continuing to climb toward heat soak. A 2024 M240i in Texas on a Stage 1 E30 map logged intake temperatures rising from 115°F to 140°F inside one run at 102°F ambient, with 6.5° of ignition correction — and the experienced reply was that "most of that is IAT ignition correction" — pre-emptive retard from the intake-temperature tables, not knock. By that reading the engine wasn't detonating. It was protecting itself, on a map that had no idea it was in Texas. Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Phoenix, Brisbane and Cape Town owners live in this variable for much of the year; a calibration built from summer logs treats it as a fact instead of a surprise.
4. Altitude — the variable nobody publishes
Garrett's engineering note on turbocharging at elevation is blunt: boost "must also increase to compensate for the lower oxygen levels as elevation increases," which pushes the compressor "up and right" on its map "due to the higher pressure ratios needed," and they recommend a turbo speed sensor to make sure the turbo "is not over-speeding." A Colorado X3 M40i owner on a Stage 1 map, logging at 5,000 and 9,500 feet, described the result from the driver's seat: the turbo "really struggled" to reach target in the 4,000s. Neither platform publishes an altitude assumption. The most-cited altitude story on the forums is a Denver 550i whose owner blamed OTS maps for two engine failures; a bootmod3 dealer blamed fuel and mods, a log and a dyno sheet were eventually posted and argued over, and the cause was never established. We won't tell you the map killed that engine. We will tell you that Denver, Johannesburg, Mexico City and Calgary are not the conditions any shelf map was written in, and that elevation is the first question we ask after fuel.
5. The gearbox — the limit that quietly caps your tune
xHP's engineering write-up explains the mechanism better than any forum: "All automatic transmissions have 'Torque Limits' stored in their TCU," and when the engine tune exceeds them, "the TCU will request the ECU to back down." The TCU doesn't measure torque; it trusts a calculated value the DME broadcasts. Some tunes "bend" that calculation to slip past the limit — and xHP's warning is that the offset between calculated and real torque leaves the transmission running with too little line pressure, which means "more slip on every shift" and clutch wear over time. An X3 M40i owner on a bootmod3 Stage 2 map found exactly that: torque "limited <550nm all the way," the map "did not remove the torque limit," and the bootmod3 tuner in the thread said you "really need xHP on both" — OTS or custom. Whether your gearbox is clipping your flash is a log question, not a forum question. It's also one of our intake questions, because the calibration changes depending on the answer.

What does "custom tune" mean today — and what doesn't it?
Mechanically, the process is the same everywhere bootmod3 runs. You submit a tune request in the app; the tuner sees it in a Tune Requests tab; the base map is sent to the tuner matched to your car's calibration details; the file that comes back is locked to your VIN; you flash, drive, log, and the tuner revises. What varies is everything around that.
We surveyed the published terms of a dozen tuners across the US, UK, Australia and Europe in September 2026. Prices ran from about $435 to $1,599, £375 to £1,600, and AUD 1,200 upward. Revisions were "not stated" more often than they were stated; where they were, the range was three to ten, or until "all parties are satisfied," with one shop offering 12 months of support and most offering no window at all. Turnaround ran from about 24 hours to one to five business days per revision. Additional fuel maps cost $175 to $450, or £83 to £250, each. Where refund terms were published at all, they read "all sales are final" or a close variant. And a middle category sells "pro" shelf maps — better than the platform's OTS, still not built from your logs — and says so in its own product name: off the shelf, "no need for datalogging or revisions."
None of that is a scandal. It's a market with no standard definition of the product, which is why "how much is a custom tune" is the wrong first question. The right ones are below.
The seven questions to ask any tuner before you pay — including us
1. Is my file built from my datalogs, or is it an adjusted shelf map?
Both exist and both are sold as "custom." The difference is whether the first file you receive was written after someone looked at what your engine does on your fuel, or before. Ask which. Our answer: from your logs. The first file is deliberately conservative for your exact hardware, you drive it normally for a day or more, then log, then we step it up. We look at knock activity, fuel trims, boost target versus actual and intake temperatures on every revision — that is the job, not the extra.
2. Who is actually calibrating my car, and what have they done on my engine?
Not the brand. The person. Ask how many years they've been calibrating and how much of that is on your engine family, because a B48 and an S58 are not the same problem and neither is a Supra B58 versus an M340i's. Our answer: one tuner, one file. The tuner who writes your base file owns your VIN through every revision. We don't publish tuner names, and we won't for you either; what we will tell you is that nobody calibrates here with less than six years behind them, and that our Tuning Coordinator assigns the job by platform experience, not by who's free.
3. How many revisions, over what window, and what pauses the clock?
This is where the vague answers live. "Unlimited" usually means "until we stop answering"; "not stated" means you'll find out. Ask for the number, the window, and what happens if your car is down for a month with an unrelated failure. Our answer is the same at every stage, because the procedure doesn't change with the stage: four revisions inside a 60-day window that starts the day the base file lands in your platform. The window exists to keep the process moving, not to cut you off — documented pauses for a failed part or a car that's off the road are honored, and a client who paused from July to November was still finished. What it doesn't cover is a build that never stops changing. Ask the same question of anyone else and expect a number.
4. What fuel is the file for, and what does a second map cost?
A calibration is written for a fuel. If you want 93 and E30, or 98 RON and a water-methanol map, that's two calibrations, and the price should say so up front. Ask also whether "flex fuel" on offer is a real ethanol sensor feeding the DME or a fixed-blend map you're expected to keep mixing to. On bootmod3, true flex fuel needs the CustomROM software and a sensor; without them, ethanol maps are fixed-blend, and a fixed blend is only as good as your last fill. Our answer: one fuel map is included with every calibration, at every stage; additional fuel maps are $200 each and are chosen at the time of purchase, so the plan is settled before the first file is written; and we'll tell you plainly whether your car can run flex or fixed-blend before you buy anything. Fuel is the ceiling on most builds, not the turbo, and we'd rather you hear that now than at revision three.
5. What happens if I change hardware mid-tune?
A file written for one turbo, one pump or one downpipe is wrong for the next one, and a tuner who says "no problem, send logs" is either re-starting your tune for free or quietly guessing. Ask. Our answer: hardware is finished before calibration starts. No mid-tune changes. If you're still deciding on a part, decide first — it's cheaper than a second calibration.
6. How do I reach you, how fast do you answer, and in what time zone?
The most common failure of a remote tune isn't a bad file. It's silence. A Supra forum thread titled "ghosted by…" is about a tuner who delivered a base file quickly, one revision, then nothing for over a week across multiple emails; the benchmark one member held up was a rival tuner's "same day or next day with tune revisions." Ask where support lives, who answers, and when. Our answer: one point of contact, our Tuning Coordinator, who manages the queue and the tuner on your behalf. You never chase the person calibrating your car; you never have to. Our business day ends at 6 pm Eastern, and queue timing is quoted from actual queue depth when your intake is complete, not promised before it.
7. What does the price cover — and what doesn't it?
The number on the page is rarely the number you spend. Ask whether revisions, second maps, transmission calibration, and support are inside it or beside it, and what you still need to buy or install before the tuner will start. Our answer: our per-chassis pricing is live on the Tune Builder — Stage 1 $495, Stage 2 $595, Stage 3 $895 — and it covers the calibration and the revisions for that stage. Nothing else is bundled and nothing else is implied. A tune is a tune.
When custom goes wrong — and it does
A calibration built from your logs is only better than a shelf map if the process behind it is real. A Stage 2 Supra owner on the MKV forum spent about 4K — Australian dollars, presumably, from Sydney — across two tuners, made 363 hp at the wheels on 98 RON and 386 on E50, fought boost overshoot and throttle closures through revisions and a retune, and went back to the OTS map because the custom file surged on hard acceleration — even though a member pointed out that the OTS log showed throttle closures too. The owner's verdict on the first tuner: a "great guy just not proficient in the software and the engine." That's question two. No revision path was ever defined in the thread. That's question three. The story isn't an argument for OTS. It's an argument for asking before you pay.
The counter-example is just as instructive. A 540i owner whose car threw drivetrain-malfunction warnings after a flash had it fixed in under an hour by a remote session with the platform's support; a second 540i owner in the same thread, fixed the same way twice, called that support "the best that I've ever experienced." By the owners' account the problem wasn't the calibration — it was files missing from the DME after the flash. Which is the last thing worth saying about OTS-versus-custom: a lot of what gets blamed on "the tune" is plugs, coils, fuel, or the flash itself, and a tuner who reads logs will find that faster than a forum will.
Bottom line
An OTS map is a good average car's calibration. If you own a good average car — factory turbo and fueling, the labeled fuel at real quality, temperate, low, and stock hardware or exactly the hardware the map expects — it will serve you well, and we'll say so. The moment your car stops being average in one of the five ways above, the shelf map starts guessing, and the guess is always conservative in the places it can see and blind in the places it can't. A calibration from your own logs replaces the guess with your engine's actual behavior on your fuel in your air. That's the whole difference, and it's worth paying for only when someone is actually doing it. The seven questions tell you whether they are.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is a bootmod3 or MHD OTS map safe?
On a stock-hardware car running the fuel the map is labeled for, in a temperate climate near sea level, yes — the platform OTS maps are conservative by design and run on a very large number of cars. They become a poor fit when the turbo, fueling, fuel quality, heat, altitude or gearbox limit differs from what the map assumed, because the map can't see any of those.
2. Is a custom tune worth it on a stock turbo?
Sometimes. If your fuel matches the label, your hardware matches the stage, and you drive where the map was written, the gain is modest and a shelf map is a fair choice. If you're on RON-market fuel, in a hot or high place, or running any hardware the map didn't anticipate, a calibration from your own datalogs is the safer file, not just the faster one.
3. Should I run the 91-octane map on 93 fuel for safety?
It's a margin play that works when your fuel is worse than its label — an Australian owner's logs showed lower corrections on the 91 map with the same fuel, a US M240i owner found the 91 map helped slightly, and Canadian and Californian fuel quality is the usual explanation members give. It also gives up power the entire time and treats a fuel-quality problem with software. Fix the fuel first, or have a calibration written for the fuel you actually have.
4. Do I need a custom tune for a hybrid or upgraded turbo?
Yes. A different compressor and turbine change airflow and spool far enough from the shelf map's assumptions that the car will hunt, overshoot or throw codes, and the turbo's own manufacturer recommends a custom calibration. Until that file is on the car, stay out of wide-open throttle on the shelf map.
5. What should a custom tune include?
A base file written from your datalogs by a named process, a stated number of revisions inside a stated window, one fuel map with a clear price for any second map, a rule for mid-tune hardware changes, a support channel with a response standard, and a price that says what it covers. If a tuner can't answer all seven questions above before you pay, keep asking.
6. Can I start on an OTS map and go custom later?
Yes, and many owners should. Run the shelf map, log it, and let the logs tell you whether the car is asking for more. When it is — new hardware, a fuel change, a move — the custom calibration starts from what your car has already shown, not from a guess.
